New blog by Mark O’Connor explores the rich history of music

Posted: July 22, 2011 by Music Works Northwest in Uncategorized

Have you ever seen the O’Connor Method books for violin, viola, cello and orchestra?

Well we’d like to tell you about a new blog, where Mark O’Connor himself posts about music history, which he found during his research for the O’Connor Method. Take a look at the New American School of String Playing to read and comment on these stories about the rich history of music!

And come by our website to find out about the fantastic workshop we’re planning in September: the Mark O’Connor Method violin teacher training workshop!

Find out more about the workshop, scheduled for Sept. 22-25, by going to the Mark O’Connor Method section on our website!

Music Works Northwest depends on donations from generous community members to succeed in our mission of “enriching the quality of life for children of all ages through accessible music education and experiences”. So we’d like to get the word out about an amazing charitable opportunity on June 23 (today)!
The Seattle Foundation created the GiveBIG challenge to make donations to King County nonprofit organizations larger than ever — and you don’t have to spend any more money. But this will only happen Thursday, June 23!

GiveBIG will grow your generosity in several ways:

  • Grow your gift! The Seattle Foundation and local businesses will match a share of every contribution made through The Seattle Foundation’s online Giving Center between 7 a.m. and midnight on June 23.
  • Win a Golden Ticket! During the day, you could be chosen at random to have your charity of choice, Music Works Northwest, receive an additional $1,000 from GiveBIG’s sponsors.
  •  Music Works Northwest would like to have our entire community donate $10 per person.  Please help spread the word about this campaign. For the same amount one would spend on 3 lattes at Starbucks you can benefit Music Works Northwest entire organization.  Help us make this happen.
  • All participants who donate $25 or more will receive an invitation to our Summer Breeze Music Party on August 13, 2011, 2 p.m.-4 p.m.

We encourage you to join all our supporters in giving big on June 23.

Here’s what you can do! Donate to Music Works Northwest between 7 a.m. and midnight on June 23 through our page in The Seattle Foundation’s Giving Center.

Rally your friends to support Music Works Northwest on June 23rd!  Email, Facebook, Twitter, phone calls and even in-person conversations are great ways to spread the word and help us take advantage of GiveBIG.  Be sure to share the link to our profile:

Thank you for your support!

Have you been taking music lessons for a year or more? Why not join a band!

This July, we’re looking for musicians who want to learn what it takes to start a band. For those who have always wondered how musicians go about recording CDs or playing concerts, the answer is at Rock Shop!

Instructor: Brendan Bosworth
Date: July 18-22, 2011
Time: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Place: Music Works Northwest (map)
Ages: 8 – 18 years (for exceptions please call)
Price: $300 (sign up for additional camps and ask about saving 5%)

Rock Shop is open to all singers, guitarists, drummers, woodwinds, brass, keyboardists and bassists! The camp is designed to be a first ensemble experience for young musicians who either aspire to form their own band or wish to participate in the school jazz band.

When the session comes to a close, students will have a better understanding of basic chords, improvisation and playing popular songs. Activities during the session include guest artists, clinics and Friday concert/raffle/pizza party.

As written on our website, here is what young musicians will do during Rock Shop:

  • During the week campers will be instructed on how to approach popular music with a healthy singing technique!
  • Campers will have the opportunity to select songs from a pre-selected current pop repertoire. They will receive one-on-one vocal and performance tips for their songs and learn how to perform them on a microphone and with a professional band.
  • The week will finish with a performance with a live band at Music Works NW, giving singers a chance to share all they’ve learned with friends and family.  A live recording will be provided.
  • Singers that play guitar or piano and wish to accompany themselves should notify the Camp Director.

Register now and join us for this year’s Rock Shop! Fill out the Summer Programs registration form.
